Amping up the Grey Area
It’s official: grey is the new black! Just how teams in the past incorporated black into their uniforms without it being an actual school color, teams have recently taken the same road except with the color grey. Whether it be the primary color of the jersey, a faint outline or a tiny addition, check out how these teams have implemented this traditionally-dull color in hopes of creating a sleek look.

Gah these Ducks is really getting underneath my skin! I swear every over-used uniform idea or trend in college football originated in Eugene, Oregon and also every idea that hasn’t been stamped with the swoosh has been captured and perfected by Oregon. To no one’s surprise, the trend of using grey in a team’s uniform started with Oregon and has now spread like wildfire. The Ducks have used many shades of grey including light grey and carbon hues incorporated into their 124,345,457,856 different uniform combinations. To me Oregon is like the one kid on the playground that everyone looks up to and copies, but really isn’t that cool. Will I ever be able to write an article relating to college athletic uniform without mentioning these pestering birds?
Out of all the grey jerseys I’ve seen so far this season, these may just top the list. The neat thing about these uniforms are the fact that they serve as the Falcons’ away uniform and also represent the planes that these players will soon operate in service. This particular AF uni isn’t as nice as these or these, but they are definitely a successful mission.
I could’ve sworn that Nike Pro Combat uniforms were a one time deal for schools. Apparently I stand corrected because Boise State has reverted to the ways of the old Nike-infused grey jerseys this past week against AirForce. It just so happened that due to the home jersey change, AirForce couldn’t suit up in their new away uniform, which is grey. I’m not saying these jerseys dont look nice and all, but I thought Boise St. was blue and orange. PS Looks like I’m not the only one upset by the switch…
Sick! This particular alternate uniform is arguably Washington State’s most succesful source of excitement in the modern Cougar Football era! All joking aside, Nike hit a homerun with these babies. I’m not sure if the be-dezzaling of the helmet decal was necessary, but these bad boys are gorgeous!
Man, I love Okie State’s black white and orange jerseys, why throw in grey? Adding grey, which isn’t a school color, makes the already-unique uniforms look forced. You can see clearly in this picture that the helmets did not match the pants, which threw off the entire get-up. As long as the university keeps the orange and black, there is absolutely no reason for the Cowboys to experiment with grey.
Whatdya know, the trend has sweepted from Beavertown Oregon across every gridiron in the land and now is making it’s way onto the hardwood.
With a switch to Under Armour, the Gamecocks have recently released the team’s new alternate uniforms. There have been grey SC hoops jerseys in the past, but my question is: Where’d the grey come from?
Recently spotted in a video featuring St. Louis Cardinal’s World Series sleeve patches was this jersey: rumored to be the one worn in the Carrier Classic matchup against UNC this November. The jersey is a grey and white camoflauge pattern which goes hand in hand with th uniform that the oppoising tarheels unifroms released earlier this week. Although coach Izzo denies knowing anything, it looks like once again Michigan St. has reached beyond the school’s green and white color scheme in order to spark some conversation.
This nation basketball powerhouse has recently added an alternate grey jersey to be worn a few times throughout the upcoming season. Kentucky released the alernate uni which still features Nike basketball’s signature semi-transparent artwork on the back in white, the numbers and wording in blue, and the jersey itself faint grey. The wildcats have dawned metallic, silver-looking jerseys in the past, but this one is no doubt the best looking.
There’s a few examples of the un-needed use of grey in college uniforms across the nation. I am all for neat uniforms and innovation, as long as the uniforms stay within the school’s three school colors. Hope you enjoyed, feel free o comment and pass it on!
